About Cahaba River WMA Shooting Range
Cahaba River WMA Shooting Range is a premier public shooting facility located approximately 10 minutes southwest of Helena, Alabama, at 3956 Coalmont Road. Managed by Alabama’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, this range stands out as one of the region’s most professionally maintained public shooting facilities, offering comprehensive shooting opportunities for hunters, sport shooters, and outdoor enthusiasts.
The range features multiple shooting disciplines in thoughtfully separated areas. The rifle range extends to 100 yards with targets positioned at 25, 50, and 100-yard lines, each equipped with individual steel plates for immediate feedback. The covered concrete benches provide comfortable, weather-protected shooting positions. A dedicated pistol area accommodates handgun shooters, while a separate shotgun facility handles clay target shooting east of the main range complex. This separation ensures safety and allows shooters to focus on their specific disciplines without cross-facility distractions.
Operating on a first-come, first-served basis, the facility operates Wednesday through Sunday. Winter hours (October-March) are 8 AM to 4 PM, while summer hours (April-September) extend to 6 PM, allowing flexible scheduling for shooters. The range is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, with additional closures on major holidays including Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve/Day, and New Year’s Eve/Day. All shooters must check in with Range Officers before using the facilities, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations.
License requirements are straightforward: Alabama residents aged 16-64 need a valid hunting, heritage, fishing, or WMA license, while non-residents aged 16 and up require a WMA or non-resident hunting license. Children under 16 must be supervised by an adult. The range enforces strict safety rules, prohibiting alcohol and requiring firearms to remain unloaded and muzzles downrange when not actively firing. Only legal ammunition is permitted - no armor-piercing, tracer, or incendiary rounds.
Visitors consistently praise the facility’s professional management and excellent condition. The natural setting adds to the experience, with users reporting stunning scenic surroundings. The Range Officers are frequently noted for their friendly demeanor, clear communication, and thorough instruction on range procedures and firearm safety. The combination of well-maintained facilities, clear safety protocols, and professional staff creates a welcoming environment for shooters of all experience levels.
